You can get the toolbar back again. Try this:


  1. Open the File menu and select Options.
  2. Click Add-ins.
  3. Select Disabled Items from the Manage options.
  4. Click Go.
  5. Highlight any EndNote add-ins in the list and click Enable.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Close Word and reopen it.
For Word 2010 and later: If this doesn't fix the issue, the EndNote tab of the Ribbon tab may not be selected.
  1. Open the File menu and select Options.
  2. Click on Customize Ribbon
  3. Tick EndNote if it is unchecked.
  4. Click OK to display the EndNote tab in the Word Ribbon.
  1. Open EndNote
  2. Open the EndNote menu and select Customizer
  3. Tick Cite While You Write
  4. Click Next.
  5. Open Word to check that the EndNote toolbar has appeared.
