The creator is generally the first owner of copyright.

Some exceptions:

  • employees creating as part of their role
  • the Government
  • some commissioned material
  • work created with other co-authors

If there is any uncertainty, refer to any agreement or contract that may have been signed prior to the creation, or write and sign one that includes all parties.
